Federal regulators have proposed new labeling requirements that would make supplement companies substantiate the dosages printed on their bottles through third party testing.

Why it matters

Independent lab analyses have repeatedly found supplements that contain far less of the active ingredient than the label claims, and sometimes none at all. Under the proposed rule, companies would need documented verification before making dosage claims.

What shoppers should do now

Until rules like this take effect, the burden stays on the buyer. Look for brands that already publish third party test results (USP, NSF, or independent certificates of analysis). That is the same standard we apply before anything earns a recommendation in Our Picks.

The comment period runs through the fall, and industry groups are expected to push back on testing costs. We will follow the story as it develops.
